The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. YESCO (Young Electric Sign Company), a local sign manufacturer, stepped in and offered to design, build, and install the sign for free—with one condition: they would own it and profit from advertising on it.

Willie Brennan, a YESCO designer, created the initial sketch, inspired by the classic “Hollywood” sign but with a distinctly Vegas flair. The final design featured a stylized depiction of playing cards, neon lights, and the now-famous phrase "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas."

A Neon Masterpiece: Design & Construction

The sign stands 25 feet tall and 30 feet wide, constructed on a steel frame with durable aluminum panels. It’s illuminated by over 1,500 incandescent light bulbs (later upgraded to LED for energy efficiency) that create its signature dazzling glow. The original design included rotating lights, but they were removed due to concerns about distracting drivers.

The iconic starburst radiating from the center of the sign wasn't initially part of the plan. It was added during construction as a way to fill empty space and enhance the visual impact. The vibrant colors—red, yellow, blue, and white—were chosen to stand out against the desert landscape.

Relocation & Preservation: A Vegas Tradition

The “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign wasn’t always in its current location. It was originally erected on land owned by YESCO, about a mile south of where it stands today. As the city expanded and traffic increased, the sign was moved several times before finally settling at its present spot on Las Vegas Boulevard (the Strip) in 1972.

Over the years, the sign has become deeply ingrained in Las Vegas culture. It’s been featured in countless movies, television shows, and photographs. In 2009, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its cultural significance.
